Can I sell a song I released on DistroKid, TuneCore or CD Baby?
By the Sell Your Song team · Last updated:
Yes, you can sell a song you released yourself through DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby or a similar distributor. Independent music is exactly what we buy, and self-releasing usually means you own the recording outright.
Selling your independent music: who owns what?
When you self-release, you normally own the recording — the distributor just delivers it to Spotify and other services and passes on the money. The songwriting side is separate: it belongs to whoever wrote the song, and earns its own royalties, for example through PRS. You can sell either side, or both, depending on what you own. Can I sell my PRS royalties too?
If you wrote the song and receive PRS statements for it, your songwriting share can be part of the sale. If you co-wrote it, see selling your share of a co-written song.
Statements to have ready
- Your distributor statements or earnings export (DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, etc.).
- Your PRS statements, if you receive them.
- Any other royalty statements you get for the song.
Sell Your Song is not connected to, endorsed by or partnered with DistroKid, TuneCore or CD Baby. We mention them only because many independent artists use them.
